Getting Started in JSR Ju Jitsu

Getting Started

We are always pleased to welcome new students.

It really doesn’t matter how young/old, fit/unfit, experience/inexperienced you are – you are still very welcome to come along. Our youngest students are still at primary school, our oldest has retired.

Please see our clubs page for venue details.

Jitsu builds confidence, self-defence skills, agility and fitness. Our syllabus covers techniques including:

Self Defence – Striking – Throwing – Falling – Locking – Weapons – Ground Fighting

Elements of Ju Jitsu

Juniors learn the importance of discipline and respect for both others and themselves. In the sessions, they will learn how to respect the rules of the Dojo (training room) – such as no swearing. A major benefit of Jitsu is learning to be more confident and to improve posture thus avoiding potential bullying issues.  In training, Juniors learn how to defuse conflict and are advised to inform an adult or teacher about any incident.  It is also made clear that there is no shame in doing so.

Juniors are taught that violence is not an appropriate response to feeling threatened or bullied.

JSR Ju Jitsu FAQ

Can I just come along and try it?

Absolutely.  We really encourage anybody considering doing Jitsu to come along and try it out without cost or obligation. It’s really the best way to decide if the activity (and us-lot) are what you are looking for.

If we can have your Name and DOB prior to the session we can arrange insurance to keep everyone safe.

FAQs

What do I need to wear?

All you need to get started is a T shirt and a pair of track suit bottoms or shorts. Prior to training you would need to remove (or tape) any jewellery.

If, after trying Ju-Jitsu, you decide you want to continue – the club can source you a Gi (the white pyjama suit) or you can buy your own directly.

FAQs

What commitment do I need to make?

The only commitment we ask if that you come on the mat and try it… we want you have the opportunity to try Ju-Jitsu without expense or other pressures.  You will be asked to fill out a simple licence form for insurance purposes before your first session.

FAQs

Do I need to attend every session?

No. We all have other commitments too… we invite you to attend any sessions that you can (at any club).  Obviously the more you train the faster you learn, but it’s up to you.

FAQs

What does it cost?

Please see the clubs section below

FAQs

What is the style like?

Junsui Ryu Ju Jitsu is a style of Japanese Ju-Jitsu, with influences from wing-chun, aikido and wrestling.  The style is primarily a self-defence (rather than a sport), we use throws, locks and strikes in defence against attacks such as grabs, punches, kicks and weapons. We train in a very controlled environment, and work together first to learn techniques, and subsequently to apply them under a bit more pressure.  Students work at the level they are comfortable at.

In addition to the technical syllabus we focus on the appropriate application of techniques under pressure – the key concept being to disrupt the posture of the attacker to gain a momentary advantage. In a given situation different techniques will be more appropriate depending on the relative size & weight of attacker and defender.  We teach students to have an appreciation for the actions of the attacker and to continuously adapt their approach to respond, if something’s not going to plan – adapt.

Really – the only way to know is to come down and try it.

FAQs

I already hold a belt in another style – can I keep it?

We try to use common-sense…

If you already have experience in another style then Sensei Lemar will try to work out with you how similar that style is to ours and what level of experience/knowledge of our syllabus you already have.

FAQs

Am I too old / too young / too unfit / too …  ?

Our oldest student is 50-ish (he won’t tell us his real age) and our youngest student is 10.  Whatever your circumstances we will try to help you adapt the techniques to your own capabilities.  We start everybody at an intensity that they are comfortable with, and build up as confidence & fitness improvements.

This doesn’t just apply to old/young people – to apply any martial art well irrespective of our size we need to learn to adapt the techniques as best works for us. We all have people we find harder to use techniques on (usually Rick).

FAQs

Will this make me invincible?

No. Size and strength really do make a difference, and there will always be somebody bigger/stronger/better than you.  It will however increase your options should the worst happen, and the improved confidence and ability to manage an environment should make that less likely.

FAQs

Do you teach the Wuxi Finger Hold?

We do not speak of such things…

FAQs

Is there mercy in this Dojo?

Yes… sorry.

FAQs

Self Defence

Junsui Ryu Ju Jitsu is a very practical and effective martial art which focuses on self defence against a variety of realistic attack situations, ranging from a simple punch or kick, to dealing with grabs, multiple-attackers or weapons.

Unlike some other martial arts, Ju Jitsu is not a sport. We don’t train in weight categories and we don’t have rules (other than respect for each-other’s safety when training). Instead we learn the techniques appropriate to defence against a full variety of attackers – not every technique is appropriate for every attacker.

We emphasise not only effective self defence against a physical attack, but also how to respond to, and potentially control, the build-up leading to a potential attack. By greater awareness, often an attack can be prevented from happening. An aspect of our training is to allow students to experience the pressure (and fear) of a realistic attack. it is far harder to execute a graceful self-defence technique whist dealing with the adrenaline and fear in a real defence situation. Through repeated exposure to this sort of pressure, our students are better prepared to remember their training and respond appropriately should they have the real need.

The following is sourced from Wikipedia  …

“Self-defence is part of private defence, the doctrine in English law that one can act in ways that would otherwise be illegal to prevent injury to oneself or others, or to prevent crime more generally[citation needed] – one has the same right to act to protect others as to protect oneself. This defence arises both from common law and the Criminal Law Act 1967. Self-defence in English law is using reasonable force against an unjust threat. Self-defence is a justification rather than an excuse (Robinson’s classification of defences), that is, the defence is asserting that the actions were not a crime at all.”

When responding to an attack, the self-defence technique not only needs to be effective (preventing harm to the defendant and permitting a safe end to the situation) but also needs to be a response proportionate to the threat. In Junsui Ryu Ju Jitsu we teach techniques covering a range of responses levels from a simple release, to a more forceful response. Our goal is to empower our students to defend themselves in a way which is proportional to the situation.
